Wgtn meeting Wed 18 Dec 2019

This is the final meeting of the year and for those who attend there will be nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks. The more 'serious' part of the meeting will be devoted  to visits to YouTube and choosing  either hilarious or computer-related videos to watch.
As usual, the meeting will officially begin at 7:30pm in Ron Oliver's basement at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn

Wgtn meeting Wed 16 Oct 2019

Our Secretary/Treasurer, Richard Elam, is due to present this month's meeting on Scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. However, Richard recently suffered some quite severe angina pain and is currently under observation in Wellington Hospital. The last report I received informed me that he was waiting to be advised about having an angioplasty operation with the fitting of a stent to widen the affected artery. It is a quick, painless operation (I went through it some years ago now)  and Richard should be up and about shortly afterwards. Hopefully, if he is feeling up to it, the meeting will go ahead as planned at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, starting time 7.30 pm.

For this month's meeting, Roger is going to talk about using Android-based phones, so if you are having trouble organising yours, or even simply finding it difficult to use, come along to the meeting and find out all about it.
As usual,  the meeting will begin at 7.30 pm in the basement at Ron Oliver's home, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn.

This is going to be a meeting with a difference.

At the last committee meeting, it was decided  to ask people to talk for a short period of time about their favourite program and then to show why they like it. If you would like to take part in this, come along to 39 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, on Wednesday evening. As always, the starting time is 7.30 pm. It could be a most interesting meeting.

It's AGM time again. I'm sure time speeds up as one ages for this year has definitely flown by. All the committee members are prepared to stand again for a further year so I guess that takes care of that - and you won't need to worry about being nominated for a position!
Afterwards, Roger will discuss the availability of free PDF readers. While  Adobe Reader is probably the best known one, there are a considerable number of others worth investigating so do come to the meeting to hear Roger's words of wisdom on the subject.

Wgtn meeting, Wed 19 June 2019

As most of you will be aware, Roger has been in China for the past three weeks. He is now back and plans to talk about his trip at this month's meeting, focusing on any computer activity that he encountered..

For the May meeting Roger is going to discuss the concept of the Virtual Machine - in particular, the ability to run Linux software on a Windows-based system.
If you are interested in running software associated with an operating system that is not being run - or cannot be run under normal circumstances - on the host computer, this is your opportunity to learn how to do it.

Wgtn meeting Wed 17 April 2019

This month's meeting features a second dose of Python programming - this time conducted by Roger and Arthur. (I think this is an attempt to lure me away from my usual programming language and join the Dark Side) .
If you have had any thoughts about programming, this might be your chance to find out what's involved and see if it really is worth the time to acquire the necessary skills. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be frustrating at times.
As usual, the meeting venue is in the basement at Ron Oliver's home, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, beginning at 7:30 pm.

Wgtn meeting Wed 20 March 2019

This month's topic is one that has been discussed on a number of occasions in the past: backing up - either just data or one's entire system.  However, John Foster, who joins us each month from the Wairarapa via Skype, requested that we talk about the subject again as there are now more ways of carrying out backups than ever before, with the cloud becoming increasingly popular.
Roger, with possible assistance from Richard, will be carrying out the presentation.
This is an opportunity to learn about the latest techniques for protecting one's data so do come along to the meeting. As always, it will be held in the basement at Ron Oliver's home, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, starting at 7:30 pm.

Wgtn meeting, Wed 20 Feb 2019

Welcome to the first meeting for 2019. Roger is going to talk about the Python programming language, developed by Guido van Rossum in the Netherlands and first released in 1990. It is based on a number of other programming languages that include ALGOL, C, C++ and Java.

If you are interested in writing your own programs, now is the time to find out at first hand how to go about doing it. You may not become an expert overnight, but Roger will most certainly provide you with a solid start.

Arthur Harris is another member who uses Python to write programs and he has talked about the experience at a previous meeting some time ago, so there is certainly help at hand should you decide to venture further.
