Wgtn meeting Wed 20 December 2023

For the final meeting of the year, Roger is going to talk about Google Maps, and how useful they can be. I  remember after he returned from a holiday in Asia, he told us how helpful they had been for finding out-of-the-way places in countries he had never visited before. I have previously been advising members that the meetings' start time is 6.00 pm. That was designed to allow people to come along half an hour earlier for a chat before the meeting actually started. I have been asked to amend that time to 6.30 pm. As always, it is in the basement at Ron Oliver's home, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn.

Usually, at this time of the year, we have drinks and nibbles before the meeting. This year, however, that will not happen. Anne Duncan, who buys the non-alcoholic beverages and food to eat, is going into hospital to have heart surgery just prior to this meeting, so we decided to forgo that part of it. We wish Anne well with the operation and hope she will be back to her former self afterwards, although we realise there will be a period of recuperation..

The club would like to take this opportunity of wishing all members the compliments of the season.

Wgtn meeting Wed 15 November 2023

This month's meeting is definitely offering something a little different - and involves individual participation! Those who attend the meeting have to chose a smartphone app they enjoy using and explain what it does and why they enjoy using it.

If this appeals to you, do come along to the  meeting and join in. As always, it will be held at 39 Washington Avenue in Brooklyn, with a starting time of 6.00 pm.

Wgtn meeting Wed 18 October 2023

For reasons that I won't go into, there is no firm topic for the October meeting, - not at the time of writing, anyway. I may have more news in a day or two. If that happens, I shall post another notice.

There will still be a meeting so feel free to turn up at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, at 6.00 pm and take 'pot luck' that whatever is discussed may be of interest to you.

Wgtn meeting Wed 20 Sept 2023

Firstly, apologies for a lack of notice about last month's meeting. I was having a friend to stay at the time and it just got overlooked.

I suppose I could have taken the same approach for this month's meeting as well because, unfortunately, a topic for discussion hasn't been organised. That task usually takes place at the previous month's committee meeting, held a week after the main meeting, but we didn't have such a meeting last month because Richard, our secretary/treasurer, was in the process of having cataract surgery on each of his eyes and wasn't allowed to drive durng that time.

My suggestion is to simply come along to the meeting tomorrow night at 39 Washington Avenue in Brooklyn and take pot luck in the hope that it will involve a  topic that is of interest to you.

Wgtn meeting Wed 19 July 2023

Yes, it's AGM time again, as happens at every July Wellington meeting. If you feel you could add something positive to the activity of the club, come along to the meeting and have someone nominate you for committee membership. We could certainly do with some new blood.

After the formal business has been completed, there will be a discussion on cloud storage. Most of the big names in computing now offer this service, such as Microsoft's OneDrive, Google's Cloud Platform, Amazon's Data Storage with AWS and DropBox, as well as a number of others, so if you are looking for somewhere safe to back up your data, come along  to the meeting and learn all about it. Roger and Arthur will be discussing the various options available. The meetings now begin at 6:00 pm at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, in Ron Oliver's basement. I hope to see you there.

Wgtn meeting Wed 21June 2023

This meeting is definitely a little different from usual. Roger has just bought himself a new smart phone and it seems he's rather proud of it and wants to show it off. It's a Samsung Galaxy model A54, so if you're interested in finding out what this phone has to offer come along to the meeting this coming Wednesday and find out all about it. As always, it's at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, and the  starting time is 6.00 pm.

Wgtn meeting Wed 17 May 2023

This month's meeting offers something a little different. Entitled "My favourite YouTube subscriptions", members who attend the meeting will have the opportunity to show all those present a YouTube video from a channel to which they subscribe. I'm not sure if there are any restrictions - that is, whether computer related (hardware or software) videos only will be permitted - as that was never discussed, so I think there will probably be a certain degree of flexibility. One way or the other do come to the meeting at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, beginning at the earlier time of 6.00 pm.

Wgtn meeting Wed 19 April 2023

For this month's meeting, Roger is going to talk about ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that was launched in November last year. Its controversial use in schools makes it a particularly interesting topic for discussion so do try and attend this meeting. As always, it will be held in Ron Oliver's basement at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn at the earlier time of 6.00 pm.

Wgtn meeting Wed 22 February 2023 - Cancelled

Ron Oliver rang me this morning and it was immediately obvious that he hasn't recovered from the infection that he caught last week and which resulted in the postponement of the meeting last Wednesday. In light of this latest news, it has been decided to cancel the meeting for this month.

Wgton meeting Wed 15 February 2023 - Meeting postponed

Earlier this evening Ron Oliver, who hosts our meetings, rang me and during the course of the conversation he mentioned that he had had a sore throat for a couple of days, and it hurt to swallow. I wasn't happy with that news, so I decided to check with other committee members for their reaction. I eventually received an e-mail from Roger who decided to postpone the meeting, with the possibility of holding it next Wednesday, the 22nd. I will post another message if that decision changes and the meeting is cancelled all together.

Wgton meeting Wed 15 February 2023

Welcome to the first NZPCA meeting for 2023. Roger has been wanting to find a means of keeping a record of  the videos and movies he watches and has found a program which will enable him to do that by checking the meta data of the files. This is to be the topic for discussion at the meeting this Wednesday.

Remember that the meetings now begin earlier than originally - at 6:00 pm. They are still being held at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, in the basement at Ron Oliver's home.
