Wgtn meeting Wed 21 December 2022

For the final meeting of the year, Arthur is going to talk about his Twonky server set-up. Like many people, he was having difficulty with his Wi-Fi network and that comunication between his computers was never as reliable as he wished and by introducing a server into his system he has found that dependable distribution of photos, videos and other data has improved markedly.

Remember that the meetings now start at 6.00pm and for this meeting, being the season of good cheer, there will be refreshments available before the meeting starts and Arthur's talk will commence a little later. As always, it is at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn.

This month, Roger is going to discuss Bluetooth and demonstrate its functionality by bringing along some devices and interacting with them. This should be a fascinating evening so do join us at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn. Remember that the meeting now begins at the earlier time of 6:00 pm to enable Roger to get home at a reasonable hour.

Wgtn meeting Wed 18 October 2022

 For the meeting this month, Arthur Harris has volunteered to talk about TotalAV, the highly recommended anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-ransomware software, which can also remove Spyware from one's system.

As always, the meeting is held in Ron Oliver's basement at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, with the starting time now moved forward to 6.00 pm to allow Roger to get home at a reasonable hour.

Wgtn meeting Wed 21 September 2022

This month, at the suggestion of a committee member, the topic for discussion will be is Adaware, the free anti-virus and ad block program. With other popular anti-virus software such as Avast, AVG and Microsoft Windows Defender available, why should one choose Adaware? Come along and hear Roger give reasons for making such a decision.

As always, the meeting will be held in  Ron Oliver's basement at 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn. For the past few meetings the starting time has been moved forward from 7.30 pm to 6.00 pm. This allows Roger, who lives north of Waikanae, to get home at a reasonable hour.

Wgtn meeting Wed 17 August 2022 - Update

 No sooner had I finished posting the previous notice than Richard, our Secretary/Treasurer, informed me that Wednesday's meeting will be held via Zoom, starting at 7:00pm.

As already mentioned, the topic for discussion is Blue-tooth and how we can use it, so if you are interested but have yet to install Zoom on your system, just download it and follow the instructions. There are links in Richard's email that will provide the necessary information for logging in to the meeting. This needs to be done twice - after about a 45 minute period for the first part of the meeting - because only a limited amount of time is available without paying for it.

Unfortunately, this month's meeting is now uncertain after the announcement from Roger that his wife has caught Covid and he is thus forced to isolate for seven days. He stated he would inform us as to what that will mean in terms of the meeting but, so far, there has been no word from him about that. It may be cancelled or it may be via Zoom, if Roger feels up to it, The topic for discussion is Blue-tooth and the way it offers communication between devices and Roger was going to present it at Ron's in Brooklyn.

As soon as I have any information, I shall return with the latest news. 

Wgtn meeting 20 July 2022 - amendment

I have to admit to feeling rather embarrassed for totally forgetting to mention that July is Annual General Meeting month where those who attend the meeting have the opportunity to become part of the incoming committee if they so desire. However, there is no need to worry if you aren't interested as the same old crew has agreed to stand for another year. However, having said that, new blood is always welcome so if you feel that the club needs livening up, or simply a change of direction and you have ideas about that, you are more than welcome to put your hand up!

There has also been a change of plan for what follows the business part of the meeting. TED talks were suggested at the previous committee meeting but it appears that there will now be a general discussion about computer matters. That can be very interesting, so do join us at 6:30 pm via Zoom on Wednesday.

Wgtn meeting Wed 20 July 2022

Due to the increasing presence of  Covid susceptibility in Wellington, a decision has been made to hold this month's meeting via Zoom. If you have not already done so, you will need to download the Zoom app and install it. Its operation is very straightforward; just make sure that both camera and microphone are selected (the latter may also need to be enabled in Windows, via Settings and Sound).

You will need to log into the meeting twice because free use of the app only allows for 45 minutes of use. To log into the first session, the Meeting ID is 773 5464 2851 and the Password is 54321. For the second session - if you wish to stay involved - the Meeting ID is 744 8280 0486 and the Password is 12345.

The first session will begin at 6:30 pm.

 The subject of the meeting is going to feature TED talks in which computing plays a part. Roger will select ones that he feels are of particular interest..

 This month the topic for discussion is alternatives to Microsoft Office. These will include LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice and Ashampoo Office and possibly others as well. Some of them are free and open-source so considerable savings are to be had. This is an excellent opportunity to find out what these have to offer and how compatible they are with Microsoft Office.

The meetings are now beginning at 6.00 pm rather than 7.30 pm as that allows Roger to get home at  a reasonable hour.They are still being held in the basement at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington  Avenue, Brooklyn.

 This is an amendment to the notice I previously placed about Wednesday's Wellington meeting.

The meeting will commence at 6:00 pm and NOT 7:30 pm as previously stated. This allows Roger to arrive home at a reasonably early hour.

 Here is your opportunity to learn about Microsoft's latest operating system for your desktop or laptop. Arthur Harris recently bought a new ASUS laptop and that - not surprisingly - has Windows 11.0 installed on it. Arthur has been learning about the new O/S for the past fortnight or so and how it differs from Windows 10 and will talk about it at the meeting on Wednesday.

I have been in touch with Roger about the starting time for the meeting but have not had a reply as yet. Roger lives in Peka Peka, north of Waikanae,  so he has a long drive home after meetings and thought that having them earlier might be a good idea. I will post another message if the meeting is going to be earlier than the usual 7:30 pm. Otherwise it will start at that time at Ron Oliver's, 39 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn

Wgtn meeting Wed 16 Mar 2022

 Due to the considerable number of Covid cases currently in the Wellington area, and the fact that Ron's basement room is very small, it has been decided to hold this month's meeting via Zoom.An email will be sent out explaining how to log in if you haven't done that before.

This month Roger will talk about gmail and how to organise one's emails when using it. It has to be admitted that it isn't the easiest program to navigate through, so hopefully Roger will clarify it for you.
